Some rules:

1. Do not gather shellfish near sewerage outlets

2. Wash shellfish thoroughly inside and out

3. Make sure it's alive! moving suckers will be visible alongside pressurised clinging to rocks

bivalves - carefully open the shell and if it closes forcefully, then it is safe
